If you’re anything like me you have a teetering stack of books in your TBR pile but are always on the lookout for your next soon-to-be-favourite-book-of-all-time. If that’s the case here’s 10(ish) titles to get you excited!

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix

Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely. There’s always a price to be paid…and it’s usually paid in blood.

Black Woods, Blue Sky by Eowyn Ivey

I’ve been obsessed with Eowyn Ivey since I read The Snow Child in 2013 (if you haven’t read this one you should immediately do so), she has a way of writing painful experiences so beautifully.

Birdie's keeping it together, of course she is. So she's a little hungover on her shifts, and has to bring her daughter to the lodge while she waits tables, but Emaleen never goes hungry. It's a tough town to be a single mother, and Birdie just needs to get by.

And then Birdie meets Arthur, who is quieter than most men, but makes her want to listen; who is gentle with Emaleen, and understands Birdie's fascination with the mountains in whose shadow they live. When Arthur asks Birdie and Emaleen to leave the lodge and make a home, just the three of them, in his off-grid cabin, Birdie's answer, in a heartbeat, is yes.

Out in the wilderness Birdie's days are harsher and richer than she ever imagined possible. Here she will feel truly at one with nature. Here she, and Emaleen, will learn the whole, fearful truth about Arthur.

Diana Reid’s stunning writing turned to crime? Yes please!

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

Once There Were Wolves was my favourite read of 2023, gorgeous writing and an utterly compelling story. I cannot wait to see what she does next.

Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world's largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers. But with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants, packing up the seeds before they are transported to safer ground. Despite the wild beauty of life here, isolation has taken its toll on the Salts. Raff, 18 and suffering his first heartbreak, can only find relief at his punching bag; Fen, 17, has started spending her nights on the beach among the seals; 9-year-old Orly, obsessed with botany, fears the loss of his beloved natural world; and Dominic can't stop turning back towards the past, and the loss that drove the family to Shearwater in the first place.

Then, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman washes up on shore. The Unquiet Grave by Dervla McTiernan

Dying to get my hands on the new Cormac Reilly book, they just keep getting better each time!

Every grave has a story...

For years the boglands of Northern Europe have given up bodies of the long-deceased. Bodies that are thousands of years old, uncannily preserved. Bodies with strange injuries that suggest ritual torture and human sacrifice.

When a corpse is found in a bog in Galway, Cormac Reilly assumes the find is historical. But closer examination reveals a more recent story. The dead man is Thaddeus Grey, a local secondary school principal who disappeared two years prior.

There's nothing in Grey's past that would explain why he was murdered, or why his body was mutilated in a ritual manner. At first, progress on the case is frustratingly slow and Cormac struggles to keep his mind on the job. His ex-girlfriend, Emma Sweeney, is in trouble, and she's reached out to him for help - Emma's new husband has gone missing in Paris, and the French police are refusing to open an investigation into his disappearance.

Any year we get a new Taylor Jenkins Reid is going to be a good year.

The Listeners by Maggie Stiefvater

The adult debut of one of my favourite YA authors, I cannot wait.

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang - TBC

No confirmed Australian release date for this one yet, it will appear magically in the second half of the year as if conjured. And I will be ready.
