Okay, so Liv has technically been with us since the end of last year, but in all the holiday cheer we didn't get to introduce her properly!

So, introducing Liv and her favourite books to recommend!

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang 

Kuang masterfully captivates the reader in the glorious and gruesome world of Nikan, and beautifully blends modern Chinese history with fantasy,mythology and politics in this fast-paced, thought-provoking first installment of a trilogy whose characters and story have stayed with me long after I finished reading. 

Devotion by Hannah Kent

A breathtakingly beautiful story of the enduring love between two women when all circumstances act against them. The lyrical prose completely enraptures the reader in this novel, which acts as a celebration of nature and love, and artfully explores how religion and spirituality relate to the queer experience. 

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

The Goldfinch follows Theo Decker, a boy whose life becomes intrinsically intertwined with a painting after he steals it from a museum explosion. This novel is a beautiful reflection on the endurance and importance of art, with vivid and nuanced characters, and immersive and alluring prose that makes it impossible to put the book down. 

Atonement by Ian McEwan 

A beautiful and devastating novel that follows two sisters and a gardener as their lives become forever intertwined and impacted by the events of one summer day. Set during the second world war, McEwan explores the importance of perspective and storytelling, with a heartbreakingly unexpected and powerful ending.
